Wir Hier - Service Design
RSA Design Directions 2005 - Winning entry

Development Work ( Presentation Magazine PDF is here )

This group project took place at Köln International School of Design, and was supplementary to our normal studies. The RSA brief asked us to choose a contradictory human behaviour and then to design a service that "helps us engage, re-configure, manage and live with this contradiction."

A B O U T  M E Brainstorm   Several separate brain-storming sessions provided us with many ideas on possible areas and contradictory behaviors. A select few were researched further and we finally settled on the one shown below.

Chosen Contradiction Our Phase 1 research consisted of interviewing the relevant "experts" regarding to find out why this happens, for example, an eminent psychologist and a buddhist. We then interviewed members of the public and found that you are more likely to appreciate things on an individual level, but not a collective one. Phase 2 then focused on one particular community and took place in Merowinger Strasse. The aim was to understand how people related to others on their street and to gain insights into community problems.

    Reviewing Concepts   2 Main Themes:
Community + Appreciation

Goal:
To help people and communities appreciate what they already have, and what could be possible when working together.
  Process

After generating ideas, based on our research, that would foster a better appreciation and use of Merowinger's community and to make it stronger, we then asked existing and new interviewees what they thought about the concepts.

    Service Portfolio

Service Portfolio

Shown above is the final portfolio of services for Merowinger Strasse. The four stages represent the phases that we concluded that someone would need to go through in order to "change their state of mind", which was the title of the RSA competition.   1. Attention:
Initially, a problem or opportunity must first be highlighted.

2. Change Relationship:
Then the relationship between the person and the object / problem / other
people must change.
  3. Create Community:
Once a change has begun to happen it has to take hold in a group people for it to last.

4. Continuity:
How can the changes be made more lasting, so that things do not revert back?

Mock-up   Touchpoints   The next step was to put together a business plan showing what the services would cost and how they would be funded, a service blueprint and finally to design the touch-points that would be used for the services provided, which are shown to the left.

    Skills Sharing   Food Coupon   Magazine

Skills Sharing

Members are asked to offer their skills to others, and request the skills that they feel would be of use to them in return, through both a database, and a notice board. For more info, please see the magazine.

  Food Coupon

The food coupon can be bought at participating supermarkets and basically acts as money with certain conditions - it can only be redeemed for food and not for cigarettes or alcohol.
  Contradictions Magazine

Our finished entry for the competition was a magazine, which fully explains the 'Wir Hier' proposal through user journeys and various interviews.

( The prize money that we received from NESTA for this project was used to hold a one week Service Design workshop at Köln International School of Design with Fran Samalionis, who is Head of Service Design at IDEO )
